Ready Set Swim is a Proud Provider of American Red Cross Aquatics Training
COURSE PURPOSE
The purpose of the American Red Cross Lifeguarding course is to provide entry-level lifeguard participants
with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies and to provide
care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services
(EMS) personnel take over.

Lifeguarding Manual
The manual has been designed to simplify learning and understanding of the material. The manual reinforces
key points from the lecture portions of the course and contains skill sheets. It also serves as a reference after
the course. The manual is available for purchase (Stock No. 655735) or as a downloadable digital version, which can be printed. Participants must have a Lifeguarding Manual at the start of the course, a downloadable version is available below.
REQUIREMENTS FOR SUCCESSFUL COURSE COMPLETION
On successful completion of the Lifeguarding course, participants receive American Red Cross certificate
for Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED. On successful completion of the Shallow Water Lifeguarding course,
participants receive an American Red Cross certificate for Shallow Water Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED.
To successfully complete the Lifeguarding/Shallow Water Lifeguarding course, the participant must:
■ Attend and participate in all class sessions.
■ Demonstrate competency in all required skills and activities.
■ Demonstrate competency in all required final rescue skill scenarios.
■ Pass both the Section 1—CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and First Aid and Section 2 — Lifeguarding/Shallow Water Lifeguarding Skills final written exams with minimum grades of
80 percent.
PLUS A FINAL IN-WATER SKILLS SCENARIO
Participant skills are evaluated and feedback given throughout the course. The purpose of the final inwater skills scenarios is to ensure that participants have achieved a level of competency and retention of the skills learned in the course.
Participants will have to demonstrate competency in the following areas for the Lifeguarding course:
■ Head, Neck or Spinal Injury in Shallow Water
■ Active Victim in Deep Water
■ Submerged Victim in Deep Water-Time Response
Participants will have to demonstrate competency in the following areas for the Shallow Water Lifeguarding course:
■ Head, Neck or Spinal Injury in Shallow Water
■ Active Victim in Shallow Water
■ Submerged Victim in Shallow Water—Timed Response
Procedure to become a Louisville Metro Health Department Certified Lifeguard
1. Basic Lifeguard Training - This training can be American Red Cross, YMCA, Ellis & Assoc., Starguard.
These courses are taught in packages that include First Aid and CPR (32+ hours)
2. First Aid - American Red Cross, American Heart Assoc., National Safety Council
3. CPR - Must include: infant, child & adult CPR, BVM, two person CPR.
American Red Cross - CPR/AED for professional rescuer for lifeguards.
American Heart Assoc. - BLS
4. Louisville Metro Health Department Guard Course - Water Test course consists of lecture and water test and
must be completed before taking the written exam at the Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and
Wellness. Students can register by calling 502-574-6650.

3. Name of Board of Health Instructor, Location and Date of Water Test
4. Fill out Lifeguard 1 Application form
5. Pass; with an 80% or better the written test
6. Payment of $20.00 in form of cash, or check payable to: Louisville Metro Government
(Duplicate permits cost $5.00)
7. Board of Health permits are valid from Oct. 1 to Oct. 1 and must be POSTED at the pool you are working
8. PERMITS are only valid when Basic certifications are current

Ready Set Swim will host an American Red Cross BLENDED LEARNING Lifeguard course on the days listed below to ready Guards for the 2023 pool season.
(CALL FOR AVAILABILITY)
BLENDED LEARNING courses are a combination of online and in the classroom/in the water courses. Student will be required to complete online video trainings at home and then implement what they have learned from the videos in a classroom & a water enviroment to show that they fully understand how to perform a rescue on a drowning victim
Once a student has registered a link will be provided with instructions on how to enroll in the online portions of the class. A student manual will also be needed, and that link can be found below.
students must attend all classes to complete the course. A minimum of 5 students must register for a scheduled class to be held. A Maximum of 10 student per class.

Classes cost $250.00. $50.00 is due at registration & is non-refundable (unless the class is canceled), with it your spot is confirmed in the class. Your registration fee covers the cost of the Lifeguard hip pack, & CPR pocket mask, (both are yours to keep) & will be issued to you on the first day of class, plus the cost of the American Red Cross course completion card ($35) issued after successfully completing the course.
